Design Explanation by Daiwa Field Staff Mr. Uzawa
The “D-MAX Onaga/Madai SS Keep” hooks large fish that feed on the current and turns away from you. Even if it is swallowed, it remains firm in the mouth and won't fall out easily. It's design optimizes firmness: lead tester Masanori Uzawa explains the reasoning behind its development. The “D-MAX Gray” series has five variants, including “Multi”, “Speed”, and “Keep”, plus two axis variations. According to Mr. Uzawa, they have excellent firmness to “actively apply” to various techniques. He looks for two qualities in an effective hook: strength to hold large, powerful fish, and a shape that resists being swallowed. The targets are over 60cm in length, with tough teeth, so a slack or breakable hook can't be used. Besides shape, wire material and manufacturing method were reviewed to ensure strength.
Drummer has sharp teeth, and when the bait is swallowed, it will steadily rub against the teeth and be cut. Although Snapper's teeth are not as sharp as Drummer, its teeth are hard and thick, so if the hook tip becomes stuck on them, it will come off easily. As the Drummer and Snapper grow, the meat around their mouths also grows thicker. To secure the hook tightly, making sure the bottom has enough width is crucial, as otherwise it will slip through. Consequently, the wider the gape of the hook, the easy it is for the hook to bend. The question arose: how can this issue be solved?
