A flagship monster rod born to conquer 200kg-class tuna.

Project Monster Buster

At ZENAQ, 25 years ago in 1998, we introduced the Monster Buster, specifically designed to catch monster tunas.
Since then, our passion has driven us to continually develop rods for big game fishing.
Advancements in tackle, including lines and hooks, have made tunas over 200kg a feasible target.
Yet, we aspired to create a rod capable of going head-to-head with these giants in casting game.
This ambition led to the inception of Project Monster Buster.

Creating Ultimate Monster Blank

The core challenge behind Project: Monster Buster was clear:
To create a blank that can cast 100g-class lures with distance—yet still bend and lift a 200kg monster by the hands of an average-sized angler.
Too stiff, and the rod becomes a brute tool—impossible to control, exhausting to fight with, and incapable of casting lightweight lures with any precision.
Too soft, and it won’t survive the battle. It won’t lift the fish. It will simply break.
How do you overcome this contradiction?
The answer: relentless refinement.
Over the course of four years—through countless cycles of blank design, bench testing, and brutal field testing—we pushed every limit to create something that had never existed before.
And in the end, we did.
The result is the revolutionary Monster Blank—the backbone of the Tobizo - MONSTER BUSTER series.

Monster Blank Development Story

After years of trial and error, Monster Blank was finally completed.
This short movie takes you behind the scenes of its development.

What is DBL Power Booster?

The process of making rod blanks involves various factors such as the carbon material's elasticity, thickness, amount of resin, fiber angle, and taper design of the mandrel (mold). The possibilities for making rod blanks are endless.
Among this infinite array of combinations, we search for the optimal material and layer it deeply, finding the perfect orientation of fibers, and stacking them.
Our chosen method of designing the rod blank is a world apart from rods designed for finesse and lightness. It's akin to crafting the physique of a well-trained heavyweight athlete.
This manufacturing process allowed us to precisely design the necessary torque and power, fulfilling the requirements for recoil, durability, and flexibility needed for our monster blank.
In developing the Monster Rod, not only was high-level rod making technology crucial, but also the patience to find the optimal combination among an infinite array of complex carbon materials.

The Ultimate Blank Structure for Defeating Monsters

An Incredible 40 minute Battle

In just 40 minutes, a lone angler managed to reel in a 213kg monster tuna.
This remarkable achievement highlighted the exceptional performance of our monster blank, crafted for the challenging task of bending under huge pressure and lifting such massive monster tuna.

TC77 vs TC80 - How To Choose Your Monster Buster Rod?

"I guarantee you that using the TC77 and TC80 will enhance your hit rates."
A commentary movie by Makoto Kinoshita, ZENAQ Field Staff.

A whole new kind of monster rod built to land 200kg giants with lightweight lures.

Tobizo TC80 TUNA - MONSTER BUSTER - DBL

Length: 8’0” / Lure Max: 60~160g / Lure Best: 70~140g / PE 8~12

As its name suggests, the Monster Buster was made to dominate 200kg-class tuna—with incredible lift power.
But its true strength lies in its ability to cast and control lightweight lures with remarkable ease.
Traditional tuna rods could hardly handle 70g-class lures with accuracy and distance—but this one can.
A power rod that breaks the trade-off—delivering both massive strength and uncompromised performance with lightweight lures.
By expanding the lower end of its lure range, the rod allows for more flexible approaches—dramatically increasing hit probability.
It also supports large plastic lure styles commonly used in European bluefin tuna games.
And when the fight begins, the Monster Blank, driven by the DBL Power Booster, delivers explosive recoil as it bends—producing astonishing lift power.
A fusion of “lightweight lure operability” and “uncompromising power”—only possible through DBL technology.
This is a new weapon to overcome once-impossible conditions—and finally land your dream.
